Hotels In Kihei, Wailea, Makena
There are so many great spots to stay on the south side of Maui. Remember, I classify hotels and resorts as just hotels. Easier. For great prices and more info on each, check out Wailea and Makena Hotels and Resorts.
South Maui hotels, in order of my preference, by Maui Jon:
Fairmont Kea Lani (808) 875-4100
The Fairmont is the only one of the south Maui hotels in which the rooms are all suites, and they are all well furnished. The outside of the hotel has distinctive white turrets that make it stand out from the other Wailea hotels. Opened in 1991. 450 rooms. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Fairmont Kea Lani Maui
Grand Wailea (808) 875-1234
In my opinion, the Grand Wailea is not only the best of the south Maui hotels, but it is the best hotel on Maui, and in many people’s opinion it is certainly the most spectacular hotel on Maui. The Grand has nearly all ocean-view rooms, good service, and numerous SUPER elaborate pools and water slides. No matter where they stay on Maui, most people (especially kids) want to use the amazing pools at the Grand, so to keep out intruders the Grand uses a colored plastic bracelet on hotel guests to know who is allowed in the pools. My only minor complaint about the Grand is that it is in the Wailea area, which I do not like as well as Kaanapali. And some people find the Grand too busy and noisy, especially during school vacations when many families are there. Opened in 1991. 787 rooms. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Grand Wailea Maui Resort Hotel
Andaz Wailea (808) 879-1234
At the former site of the Renaissance Wailea, this modern luxury hotel opened in September 2013. Its decor is simplified elegance. The large infinity pools are amazing. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Andaz Wailea
Four Seasons (808) 874-8000
Well, what can you say? This Wailea hotel is the Four Seasons, so of course, it is luxurious and the service is fabulous. They even come around and ask if you’d like to be sprayed with Evian water while you bask by the pool. You might spot a celebrity there. But to me, it is too quiet and the pools are not anything as wonderful as those at the Grand. Opened in 1990. 380 rooms. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Four Seasons Resort Maui
Wailea Marriott (808) 879-1922
This hotel became a Marriott a few years ago, after having started in 1976 as the Intercontinental and then spending a couple of years as the Outrigger. Rooms and grounds were extensively renovated in 2006-2007. Don’t confuse this with the Maui Marriott Ocean Club (timeshare) on Kaanapali Beach, an hour’s drive away from here. 546 rooms. Wailea Marriott
Wailea Residence Inn 808-891-7460
This is part of Marriott’s chain of “extended stay” hotels, so the rooms are larger than in some other hotels, and there is a kitchen in each room. But this hotel is uphill, in a shopping area, not on a beach. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Wailea Residence Inn
Maui Coast Hotel (808) 874-6284
All of the above south Maui hotels are in Wailea, but Maui Coast is less expensive and is one of the only hotels in Kihei. (Most other accommodations in Kihei are condos.) 265 rooms. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Maui Coast Hotel
Kohea Kai Adults-Only hotel (808) 879-1261
In Kihei, this is Maui’s adults-only small hotel (26 rooms), with an open-air sundeck, across the street from a long beach. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Kohea Kai Hotel
Maui Oceanfront Inn (Day’s Inn) (808) 879-7744
In Kihei (like the hotel above), this is a smaller hotel (87 rooms) with small rooms, but on a good beach. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Maui Oceanfront Inn, Days Inn Kihei
Travaasa Hana, formerly Hotel Hana Maui (808) 248-8211
Not really in South Maui, but still on the east (Haleakala) half of Maui like all of the above hotels. Located in the tiny town of Hana at the end of the famous scenic Road to Hana. 69 rooms and cottages. For photos and more information, click on this link:
Travaasa Hana formerly called Hotel Hana Maui
Lumeria (808) 579-8877
Inland from the north shore, near the entrance to Upcountry, not actually in South Maui. This is a quiet retreat with classes on yoga, health, and other subjects. Only 24 rooms but large grounds. For photos and more information, click on this link:
