Train Ride for Kids and Family
Kaanapali, West Side of Maui
The Sugar Cane Train was a family train ride near the Kaanapali resort area on the west side of Maui. You began your round trip at the north end of the tracks, at Puukolii Road and Honoapiilani Highway. It used to run to the south end in the town of Lahaina, but more recently only ran to Kaanapali.
Up until the last few years, the Sugar Cane Train only ran around the holiday season from late November to the end of December each year. Before mid-2014 it used to run every day all year round. But there were some plans to bring it back to full-time use in 2019, but advocates failed. The land it ran through was not owned by the train. Another case where landlords burn the community.
This train used to carry sugar cane from the fields to the harbor. From 1969 to 2019, it carried tourists and locals for fun trips along the west side. The ride was about a half-hour in each direction, but it was only a 7-mile trip, with the train traveling at the leisurely speed of 12 miles per hour. Along the way, you had a view of the West Maui Mountains and the ocean, similar to the view you get when you drive the main highway that parallels the train tracks.
If your kids loved the idea of riding on a train, or you were looking for something to keep the kids busy, you would have loved it. But there are plenty more kids and family activities on Maui.
