Puaa BBQ Co is a food truck with great barbecue food in large portions and good prices.
This is some of the best barbecue I have tasted anywhere, whether from a restaurant or a food truck, whether on Maui or elsewhere. Puaa BBQ has sandwiches, burgers, plate lunches, and side dishes. They feature several varieties of pork, but they also have beef, ahi (tuna), shrimp, and more. There are 17 items on the menu, so more choices than most food trucks.
My favorite item at Puaa BBQ is the 808 Cubano. This consists of a large serving of very tasty tender BBQ pulled pork on a brioche bun, topped with smoked ham, pepper jack cheese, garlic aioli, and pickles, plus a side of fries. Come hungry and get a few extra napkins to eat this one.
Puaa is the Hawaiian word for pig. This truck is named for the pig because of all the pork that they serve. But you may also recognize the word puaa as the last three syllables of the name of the Hawaiian state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaa. The reason for the word pig at the end of the name of the fish is that the fish’s name translates to “triggerfish with a blunt snout like a pig.”
