Leilani Farm Sanctuary

Newest Article: Leilani Farm Sanctuary

This year, we discovered a true paradise of compassion tucked away in Haiku: the Leilani Farm Sanctuary. Little did we know that a simple tour of this eight-acre refuge would become a favorite new spot to bring the kids.

A Tropical Paradise for Rescued Animals

The moment we stepped onto the farm grounds, it was clear this wasn’t just any animal refuge. The air carried the scent of tropical flowers, and a rooster confidently led the way down a path lined with papaya trees, banana trees and pineapples.

We walked past rolling green pastures, bright red barns, and shaded hideaways. A pond shimmered under the sun, where swans floated serenely. Just beyond, the Pacific peaked through rainforest foliage. Standing under the broad canopy of an old tree, it was easy to feel like we had stumbled into a little pocket of paradise.

Meeting the Animal Residents

Our tour group was small, with like-minded, animal lovers.  Our guide, Danielle, began introducing us to the animals (starting with Matthew, a giant turkey) each with a story of survival.

Friendly goats trotted over for treats, a donkey leaned in for ear scratches, and a giant tortoise made its slow and steady way through the grounds. We met pigs blissfully wallowing in the shade, deer munching on ti leaves, and chickens pecking curiously almost everywhere. Cats lounged, and geese honked their greetings.

One pig, Charlotte, had had escaped hunters and injured her leg and then found safety here. Now, she snoozes while visitors brush her. Watching our kids giggle as they held clucking chickens in their arms was a reminder of how simple moments can inspire long-lasting compassion.

The Heart Behind the Sanctuary

Leilani Farm Sanctuary exists because one woman took a leap of faith. Laurelee Blanchard, author of Finding Paradise and founder of the sanctuary, left a fast-paced career in California to dedicate her life to giving abandoned and abused animals a second chance. She poured her savings into purchasing eight acres of Maui land in 1999, transforming it into a haven where animals are not just safe, but loved.

Laurelee Blanchard

As we walked through the sanctuary, Danielle spoke of each animal like an old friend, sharing their histories. By allowing visitors to connect with these animals up close, Laurelee hopes to reshape the way people view farm animals: not as food, but as individuals with personalities and emotions. It’s a powerful message, and one that stayed with us long after we left.

After our hour walk around the property, we had a chance to meet Laurelee. She invited us to spend more time enjoying the area and even have a picnic in their screened gazebo.

Driving back, we couldn’t stop talking about everything we had seen and felt. If everyone could have the experience and fun of visiting this farm, the world would be kinder and more understanding.
