Maui Sailing Canoe is a family-run business that offers unique sailing/snorkeling excursions out of Polo Beach in Wailea. This activity sheds light on fascinating— yet often overlooked— aspects of Hawaiian culture, like navigation and canoe construction. The sailing canoe can accommodate up to eight guests, making the excursion an excellent pick for families.
THE TOUR
The tour begins on the sand at Polo Beach, where the captain gives guests a rundown on Hawaiian canoe sailing. Once it’s time to take to the sea, guests assist in launching the canoe from the beach— the same way ancient Hawaiians did for centuries. Soon, you’re gliding through the cobalt blue waters off the coast of Wailea, en route to a sheltered snorkeling spot. Learn how to paddle along the way or relax on the outrigger’s trampolines and take in unique perspectives of the coastline. In winter, you might also spot some humpback whales!
Once you reach the snorkel spot, the captain will set you up with snorkel gear. Here, you can enjoy uncrowded snorkeling free from tour boats, feast your eyes on vibrant tropical fish, and swim with sea turtles— if you’re lucky. In addition to snorkel gear, the captain also provides guests with cold drinks and countless facts about Hawaiian history, geology, and traditions.
ABOUT MAUI SAILING CANOE
Maui Sailing Canoe is the product of owners Sage and Liz Spalding’s love for the ocean. The duo was raised in Hawaii and grew up surfing, paddling, and sailing. Their passion for sailing and the sea led them to California Maritime Academy, where they met. After working on inter-island barges and tugboats for a stretch, they settled down on Maui and started Maui Sailing Canoe to share their passion, knowledge, and love for the ocean with visitors.
Maui Sailing Canoe utilizes a single-masted sailing canoe, Ke Anuenue. With two outriggers and trampolines stretching to the hull, there’s plenty of room for up to eight guests. Two two-hour tours are offered out of Polo Beach daily. Kids ages two and up are welcome aboard.
