Kapalua Airport Maui
Kapalua Airport (JHM)
JHM is the code for the small Kapalua Airport on the west side of Maui. Although it is called the Kapalua Airport, it is actually between Kaʻanapali and Kapalua, a few miles north of Lahaina, so sometimes it is just called the West Maui Airport. You can only fly to/from JHM from/to the other islands of Hawaii. There are no fights to or from Kapalua Airport and the rest of the United States or any other country. The other airports on Maui are Kahului Airport Maui OGG (the main big airport in Kahului) and HNM (the very small airport in Hana).
Kapalua Airport (JHM Airport on West Maui) does not accept any jets. All flights are on propeller planes. The largest aircraft here are 48-seat two-propeller ATR-42 aircraft operated by Ohana, a division of Hawaiian Airlines. This airport also serves 9-passenger single-propeller planes from Mokulele Airlines. The airport only operates in the daytime, with no flights after dark. The initials JHM stand for John Henry Magoon, a pilot who was the president of Hawaiian Airlines when the Kapalua airport opened.
Take Advantage of Kapalua Airport
An advantage of flying in or out of JHM is that it is very close to the hotels and condos on West Maui. If you are staying at a West Maui Hotel or a West Maui Condo, you are only between 5 minutes and 15 minutes from JHM. (If you arrive at Maui’s main airport in Kahului, it will take you 45 minutes to an hour to get from there to your hotel or condo on the west side of Maui.) A second advantage of using this airport is that it is very small so there are no long lines at check-in or at security, and it is much faster to check-in and board here. The small size of this airport means that it is also much faster to arrive and get your luggage and get out of the airport on arrival here. But to fly into Kapalua Airport, you will have to first fly from your home area to Honolulu, and there change planes, and change airlines, for the 30-minute flight from Honolulu to West Maui. If you prefer not to change in Honolulu, you will need to fly into Maui’s main OGG Airport in Kahului instead of JHM.
