Ami Ami is Maui’s least expensive fine-dining restaurant, and the food is wonderful. Each dish is perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The long innovative dinner menu includes 19 appetizers, soup, 5 salads, 7 steaks and chops, 6 fish and seafood entrees, chicken, duck, vegetarian choices, and 6 desserts. The dining area is open-air but mostly covered.
Here are items I have eaten at Ami Ami and what I loved about each one:
- Chorizo tacos — just the right amount of spiciness in the ground sausage, softened by avocado and tomato pieces, flavored with cilantro
- Spicy tuna summer roll — the cool fresh rice paper wrapping envelops flavorful little pieces of raw ahi tuna and crunchy vegetables
- Crisp fried tempura green and yellow beans — thin tempura coating and thick yummy dipping sauce
- Aloha Aina greens salad — contains lots of small pieces of papaya, chopped candied macadamia nuts, and the best lilikoi dressing ever
- Dungeness crab & avocado trifle — colorful layers of greens, mango, and avocado, topped with shredded crab and drizzled with the tastiest truffle oil
- Pork loin chop — 12-ounce grilled thick chop with a round piece of bacon threaded through it, surrounded by malt vinegar caramel
- Grilled ahi steak — cleverly presented with a wrapped package of smoked herbs on top, the ahi is cooked on the outside but raw on the inside, and sits on a bed of mashed breadfruit with pesto
- Coconut crusted breast of Jidori chicken — sweet crust on the chicken, coconut butter sauce, great mashed purple Molokai sweet potatoes
- Peanut butter waffle for dessert — thick Belgian waffle, creamy peanut butter, and chocolate ice cream, with chocolate and caramel sauces and macadamia nuts.
There are two rooms for private parties: the Garden Lanai and the Plumeria room. AmiAmi also provides the more casual inexpensive food at the Kamaole Poolside Cafe at this same Maui Coast Hotel.
