Scenic Botanical Garden at Maui Tropical Plantation
Maui Tropical Plantation is the only place where you can enjoy, all in one location, beautiful scenery including mountains and fields and pond, farms to see typical Maui crops such as coconuts and pineapple and coffee, restaurants, shops, and activities. It is just south of the town of Wailuku, on the western edge of Maui’s central valley.

About the Maui Tropical Plantation
When Maui Tropical Plantation first opened in 1983, it was designed as a place for visitors to learn about how Maui crops are grown, and you can still do that. On their famous 45-minute tram tour, your guide will show you and teach you about many of the 65 crops growing among the 1500 acres here, including fields of pineapple, palm trees, banana, papaya, starfruit, coffee, guava, coconut, ti leaf, flowers such as plumeria and heliconia, kukui nuts, sweet potato, breadfruit, sugarcane, mango, taro, avocado, macadamia nut, rambutan, and others. They have recently added sunflowers, a new crop for Maui. (Crops may vary by season.) The tram tour runs every hour from 10 AM to 4 PM. You can buy tour tickets at the entrance to the Plantation Store, or online.
The Plantation Store is the one other thing that has been at Maui Tropical Plantation since the beginning. This is the first building you will enter as you walk from the parking lot into the plantation grounds. In this store, the largest store on the property, you can find Aloha shirts, Hawaiian lotions and perfumes, souvenirs, gourmet food gifts, art, and many kinds of snack foods.
But a lot more has been added in recent years, making this one of Maui’s main tourist attractions. Here’s a list of what else you can find there.
Maui Tropical Plantation things to see and do
- Walk the grounds. There is no entrance fee, so enjoy walking the wandering paths and seeing the beautiful scenic views of the lagoon, the fields, and the West Maui Mountains. There is a wide variety of Maui plants, many of them labeled. The lagoon has an island, walking bridges, and live ducks. There’s an app you can download to your phone with information about all there is to see here.
- Kumu Farms is a stand where you can buy fresh produce, much of it grown right here at the plantation. Depending on the season, you are likely to find papaya, pineapple, banana, mango, guava, avocado, macadamia nuts, eggplant, arugula, carrots, fennel, parsley, sage, cilantro, basil, mint, corn, beans, lettuce, and more.
- Mill House Roasting Company sells Maui-grown coffee.
- Mill House Restaurant is a full-service excellent place to eat for lunch, dinner, or happy hour, all with a great view of the lagoon and mountains. There’s even a historic locomotive and passenger train car to see in the restaurant.
- The Scoop is the place for ice cream, shave ice, smoothies, and ice pops all made right here. Most of the fruits in their smoothies are grown here at the plantation.
- Rebecca Lowell Art is the place to see or purchase original paintings, giclee, prints, and photographs.
- Maui Zipline and Flyin’ Hawaiian Zipline are zipline activities for you to soar over the fields.
- Chef’s Table is a special gourmet multi-course fixed-price dinner held on weekends.
- On the Tropical Tram Tour mentioned above, you will see hundreds of native Hawaiian plants, tropical fruits, and crops.
- On the grounds are an indoor stage and an outdoor stage, with occasional live shows.
- You can have your wedding, private event, or corporate event on the grounds, using the fields, stages, and restaurant catering.
