Haiku Mill is a sugar mill that is over 150 years old and has not been used for a hundred years. It’s a beautiful sight on the North side of Maui at:

About Haiku Mill
This old mill and its surrounding gardens and house are full of 150 years of Hawaiian history in the heart of Haiku Maui. Haiku Mill was the leading sugar processor on Maui, starting in 1861, and continuing until irrigation allowed sugar cane production to be moved to the valley in the center of Maui in 1879 when Haiku Mill was abandoned. It was the first sugar mill to be powered by steam. The ruins of this old mill consist of stone walls, staircases, and old structural components covered with vines. There are scales and gears and machinery left from the days when this was a working sugar mill in the 1800s. There is an old house full of period furniture (all in white tones) and dozens of antiques, many French.
You can only see Haiku Mill and its house and gardens by making an advance reservation for a tour. Contact them at info@haikumill.com. On this historical and botanical walking tour around their 2.5 acres, you will also learn about the mill and about the fruit trees and other plants in the surrounding gardens. The fruit trees include mango, papaya, Meyer lemons, oranges, limes, bananas, lilikoi, starfruit, eggfruit, and breadfruit (ulu). The other plants include lipstick palms, areca palms, sealing wax palms, ivory nut palms, traveler palms, royal palms, birds of paradise, banyan trees, red fox tail chenille trees, Easter lily vine, plumeria, orange trumpet vine, night-blooming jasmine, mock orange, wisteria, angel’s trumpet, and phalaenopsis orchids.
The current owner of the mill and surrounding property is Sylvia Hamilton-Kerr, who has been beautifying it since 2009. Besides tours, the mill is now also used as a wedding venue. A centerpiece for special events is a 100-year-old mango tree decorated with white lights and a chandelier. The tree yields about a thousand mangos per year. The mill is on the National Register of Historic Places.
