Na Lio Maui
Live Show with Horses, Music, Dancing, Stories, and History in a Beautiful Mountain Setting
***Na Lio was a live horse show that opened near Lahaina in 2015 and closed a few years later.***
This show was in a beautiful setting in the West Maui Mountains. They picked you up at your west side hotel or at the Lahaina Cannery Mall, and from there a shuttle took you on the 10-minute trip to the field uphill where they had created an equestrian facility with a large lighted rectangular performance area for the horses, a small stage for the dancers, a section for the story-tellers and musicians, and just a few rows of seats for the limited audience. You arrived to see the gorgeous sunset colors on the mountains, as well as the view of the sun setting behind the island of Lanai in the ocean. Free snacks (muffins, chips, cupcakes, cookies, banana bread, juice) were available as you go to your seats. After sunset, Maui’s bright stars light up the clear dark sky while you watched the show in this open-air setting.
Na Lio means “the horses” and this show tells the history of horses in Hawaii, in a most entertaining way. After opening music, singing, and hula dancers, the narrator sits by a campfire with his family and friends to tell the story. The events are acted out on the stage and in the horse field, with several acts and costume changes, multiple singers and dancers, and of course the horses. Both the riders and the horses go through several costume changes to illustrate different eras and events. You will learn about the Hawaiian cowboys, called paniolos, the roles played by the Hawaiian royalty, and how the horse became part of the Hawaiian culture.
Na Lio was not another luau, rodeo, or dinner cruise. It was a unique program that enhanced your visit to Maui.
