Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Maui

History of Dr. Sun Yat Sen on Maui

Sun Yat Sen (1866-1925) was the first president and the founding father of the Republic of China. He beat the Qing Dynasty to establish the first Chinese republic in 1912.  He was also a physician.  He lived at his brother’s home in Kula, Maui, off and on from 1879 to 1910.

Sun Yat Sen Park is on the Kula Highway (Route 37), between Mile Markers 18 and 19, in the Upcountry part of Maui, at about the 2400 foot elevation.  It has beautiful views looking down toward Kihei, Wailea, Puu Olai, Makena, the West Maui Mountains (with their windmills), and offshore to the islands of Molokini and Kahoʻolawe.  Sunsets are beautiful from here.  In the park are bronze statues of Sun Yat Sen and his brother Sun Mei, stone statues of Chinese dragons, a stone arch, and many interesting plants. The Ulapalakua Ranch donated the land for this park in 1989.
