Lion Dance For Chinese New Year On Maui
Lion Dance Maui History and Locations
The Lion Dance is a tradition for Chinese New Year, celebrated all over the world. There is a significant population of Chinese descent on Maui, so the Lion Dance is very popular there. Dancers dressed in colorful costumes play the part of the lions, with one person in the head and another in the rear end. A loud drummer accompanies the dancers.
Chinese New Year comes between the last week of January and the first three weeks of February, but the celebration continues for a couple of weeks around that date. At that time, the Maui News and other local newspapers (available in grocery stores on Maui) list the specific dates and times, and places that the Lion Dance will be performed that year.
Popular locations to see it include:
- West side: Front Street in Lahaina, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Whalers Village
- South Side: Shops at Wailea, Piilani Shopping Village, Grand Wailea Hotel
- Central: Maalaea Harbor Shops, Makawao, Queen Kaahumanu Center
